Yellow Zinc / Dichromate

Yellow zinc has an iridescent gold passivate. Traditional yellow dichromate is hexavalent (B633 Type II) and gives more corrosion resistance than clear; trivalent yellow versions exist for RoHS.

Key points

Yellow zinc Grade 8 is common in hardware. Yellow color does not mean Grade 8.

Electroplating can load high-hardness steel with hydrogen. Parts at roughly HRC 39 and above (Grade 8, 10.9, 12.9, A574) need a qualified process and a

prompt embrittlement-relief bake, or a non-electrolytic coating instead.
