Key points
Grade 1 is essentially obsolete as a purchase callout. Grades 5.2 and 8.2 (low-carbon martensite) exist for specific products.
Above 1-1/2 in, look to ASTM specifications such as A449 and A354.
SAE J429 covers inch bolts and screws up to 1-1/2 in only. It is not a structural (F3125) or pressure/temperature (A193) specification.
